Ileostomy general informationThe ileostomy (ileum lat = greek small bowel and stoma = mouth opening) . An Ileostomy is created because of a colon disease to a large part or the whole colon. Ileostomy can be temporary or permanent. An ileostomy is a surgically created opening in the small intestine, usually at the end of the ileum. It is the exit of the small intestine to the skin surface. Ileostomy: Located between the stomach and right colon, small intestine measuring 3 to 4 meters and consists of 3 parts: the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, which connects near the appendix with the bulk intestine or colon. An ileostomy can link to surgically ileum to the outside through the wall of the abdomen, faeces are collected in a special apparatus. An ileostomy is a stoma that connects the ileum to the outside through the wall of the abdomen through a surgical procedure. Thus, intestinal transit is derived directly from the ileum to the outside and feces are collected in a specific apparatus. This apparatus is formerly known as "artificial anus" even if the only thing in common with an anus is the possibility for the stoma to pass feces. The ileostomy is performed after a colectomy (removal of all or part of the colon), or because the surgeons want to retain the continuity of the two segments cut but may do so in the immediate future (the case of peritonitis, for example) or in the case of too much of the colon in damaged: in this case, the conservation of this is impossible. The ileostomy is to get feces stuck in a pocket on the skin called artificial anus. Stool passing through the artificial anus (ileostomy) are often relatively liquid. In these circumstances, the major risk is skin irritation in the pocket. There is also a risk of loss of nutrients and water, which requires regular care by both the patient himself and by the medical profession. These potential losses and mineral water must be compensated by adding water, vitamins and minerals. Nurses used to this type of care may be able to educate patients on how to proceed during the care of the ileostomy. Ileostomy means that the end of your small intestine or ileum was cut and sutured to the skin of the abdominal wall. Your stools go now in your ileostomy bag and you can not control their emissions, which requires the use of a collection bag. The ileostomy is done when a disease or injury has rendered the large intestine incapable of fulfilling its role as the materials it carries. The ileostomy was performed because the surgeons want to retain the continuity of the two segments cut but can not do so in the immediate or in the case of too much of the colon: in this case, the conservation of it is impossible. What are the immediate consequences of an ileostomy? ... Ileostomy surgeryIn the case of an ileostomy, the ileum is attached to the skin. In the post-operative period, the stool is liquid because the reabsorption of water has not occurred. Then after 3-4 weeks, your small intestine will acquire certain properties normally attributed to the colon. Therefore, stool volume will decrease and will be a bit more consistency.Ileostomy care ... Ileostomy careThe establishment of an ileostomy induces a modification of intestinal transit due to the exclusion of the colon. At first, the stool is more liquid and more abundant than before. But in a few weeks, the small bowel will learn to reabsorb more water. Little by little, you can gradually reintroduce fruits and vegetables, dairy products in increasing numbers, and then fruit and vegetables which are more difficult to digest. Ileostomy care implies keeping a diet. This is to help you keep a good health and to avoid troubles like bad smell or leakage of the ileostomy bag. In the first weeks your live could be somehow hard but after a month or so you will be able to continue with your ordinary live even practice your favorite sports. Some people need to make adjustments to their diet when they become the bearer of a stoma. Foods rich in fiber (eg, peels potatoes and vegetables) are difficult to digest by the small intestine and can cause blockages or discomfort when they pass through the stoma. Chew the food to help minimize these problems. Some people find that certain foods cause nuisance gas or diarrhea. However, people who have an ileostomy due to inflammatory bowel disease usually find that they can enjoy a more normal diet than they were to follow before their operation.
