Ileostomy Care

Taking care of an Ileostomy ...

There are some things one should consider when taking care of a stoma or an ileostomy. And this include some diets, or what food you should be careful with, and sports (like swimming) of course . Just read the list below to get a better idea of ileostomy care methods.

Ileostomy will not significantly affect your digestion. Try to eat as normally as possible. There are several restrictions, though. A special diet is required only if you have other associated diseases (eg diabetes, liver disease, etc.).. In this case you need to follow a diet recommended by the practitioner.
Your appetite may return to normal after several weeks after the operation, especially if the recovery after surgery was not fast enough. We advise you, after resuming oral nutrition, not to eat much at once. Eat at regular intervals.
Foods must enter gradually in nutrition. If you feel that a certain food will not do well, you are advised to try it again after approx. a week but only if you think you will tolerate it.

Ileostomy locks can be caused by foods such as nuts, coconuts, some vegetables, vegetables and fruit very rich in cellulose fibers.
A blockage of ileostomy causes colic, which usually is temporary. Some foods like beans or cabbage fries cause flatus excess. In this case limit these foods.
Beer, chocolates and some fruit (like kiwi) can have laxative effect which will lead to empty the bag more often. Strong spicy food can trigger diarrhea. If you want to consume spices, they should be less intense. Eggs can cause intense unpleasant smell of ileostomy.

Health professionals will help with food recommendations, but very soon you will pick your food alone.
Do not forget! Ripe bananas or hollyhock can reduce a fluid consistency (diarrhea). Mint tea may reduce gases. Natural yogurt may reduce the unpleasant smell that of gases. You may have an increased intake salt especially in summer when it is very hot or when you have diarrhea.

You can consume alcohol but it can cause dehydration. You can see that beer and wine increase the volume of disposal ileostoma.

Other useful ileostomy care tips :

* To prevent dehydration and if you exercise in hot weather drink more fluids.
* So that sodium and potassium to be replaced quickly in your organism, keep an electrolyte drink (like Gatorade) in stock. The electrolyte drink can be frozen, for a refreshing joy.
* If you have cramps, and thinks that your ileostomy may be inhibited, take a hot shower. Let the hot water run on your back for about 15 minutes. If the cramps continue, call your doctor imidiately.
* Always have medication in your bag . Ask your doctor or pharmacist for medication,do not play the doctor and buy without prescription. Liquid medication is best.
